Adware, or spyware may be slowing down your system. Get a good spyware removal tool, Spyware Search and destroy is a great free one.

go to start, run, msconfig, and then under tab startup go through and see what applications you dont need to startup. however, if you dont know what it is, dont delete it. you could crash your system. also if you arent sure about something you could try and google search it. might be spyware too. good luck
press ctrl+alt+delete and then click on task manager then go to procceses. if u have over 40 then its gonna be one slow startup but dont just go deleting anything ask a proffecional or someone who knows alot about computers to tell u witch ones to get rid of.
Down load 'Spybot' (free) and run it. It will identify and is able to fix a lot of problems. This may help.
Mine is doing the same thing.

It started after i used lime wire a week or so ago, i don't know if that was the problem, but after that, it has taken eternity to start up. I tries a system recovery, and a computer maintenance, it helped some, but, it is really bad still... hope you find out what did it.. try your firewall.sometimes mine decides to be a big pain... I think i might stick the laptop in the microwave and see if it wants to cooperate a bit sooner..lol...
"sad :[" may be right. This has happened several times to my desktop computer. Luckily tho I use LavaSoft Adware (Ad-Aware SE Personal). It's free and it does the job. Also Yahoo has an anti-spy feature which scans your files and lets you choose which to remove (I remove ALL!) I use them both and my system seems to run fine. Hope this helps.

Also, to answer or to help hmmmfunny's problem with lime wire, it may be quite possible that you've aquired a virus. Were your downloads anything other than mp3s? Viruses are attached to pictures, videos, text files, etc... What I recommend is to SCAN EVERY FILE AFTER IT IS DOWNLOADED. I use Windows Live One Care, and it's simple to use and works wonders, believe me!! Best of luck to you.!!
you may be doing a microsoft update rather than windows update.

On your update webpage change the settings to do windows update only.

If you had done microsoft update then do this.

Start windows in safe mode.

using explorer go to the folder windows/softwaredistribution/datastore and delete anything in the datastore folder.

This is safe to do as the file rebuilds itself, you can try it even if you had'nt done microsoft update. See if it improves your laptop.
hey, try to read this book, it helped me alot

its just magic
