OEM Software--Windows XP--some say illegal/won't work, others say that it's OK???

I have a refurbished computer that I found at gov't auction. In great shape, but no O/S with it. Can't see paying more for the O/S than I did for the 'puter!

I want Windows XP Home Edition, w/ SP2, Full Version. Best Buy has it for close to 200 bucks. A seemingly respectable (4000 positive feedback comments for it on Yahoo!) direct-buy online store has the same for 85 bucks.

The online store says you're paying for the packaging at Best Buy, and that their software is the same on the inside...it's put out by MS for System Builders. Other sources online say that OEM software is illegal, and won't work properly/have the extras.

If I'm using the computer only for online surfing, letter writing, and school/work, will the OEM version work, or is my best option the pretty-boxed version from Best Buy? Will the OEM require any other knowledge on my part than, plug it in, let it go?

Thanks! :)

If u are sure of the integrity of the Direct-buy store, then you can go ahead. As long as they send you a unique Windowx XP Key, it is not illegal. There can be some issues with the OEM version so be sure that the store has a return policy. For example, some OEM versions only install and work on certain brand computers. The XP Keys that come with Dell computers, only work on computers that are DELL computers if you try to install that Windows on another non DELL computer, the Key does not work and you cannot activate the windows.

So if you run into a toruble like this, you should have the option of returning. Other than this there will be no difference in functionality of the operating system. There might be some extra features such as DELL icons, or HP Icons present on the dekstop, but they are extra features and not missing features.

don't worry i have no licence for any of my 6 computers i i don't intend buyng, also i have a lot of expensive software with no licence they are all cracked
OEM software is the exact same software as the full version with afew exceptions:

1. OEM software usually sin't in a pretty package

2. OEM software usually doesn' have instructions

3. OEM software usually doesn't offer the same tech support.

Buy the OEM windows software, it will be fine for you. In order for them to sell the OEM software it has to be bundled with hardware, so the usually include some cheap piece of crap hardware for free.
Most OEM operating systems only come with drivers for the computer that it originally came with. If you or a friend has an OEM that they no longer use, try it. If it doesn't work for your computer, you may have to buy a full non-OEM version.
There are many type of OEM software. I think as long as you have a verifiable serial number it should be a legal copy. As far as I know OEM software should work. Some OEM software are specifically made for some brand name computer like Compaq or Dell, they won't work on other PC. So you have to be careful what you are buying. If all you do is surf the web, look for a older verison OS on E-Bay.
