i have an hp windows xp home edition sp2 desktop computer and i'm upgrading to windows xp media center edition 2005 and i need to know if you NEED the media center remote to use it and if so, can i use it with the pc i currently have or do i need to buy an infrared signal reciever for my pc?

If you do not have a TV tuner card you are wasting your time changing to MCE.
If you have a TV tuner card you can use what ever came with that setup. If you do not have the MCE disks that came from HP, then the HP remote will not work on the system unless you load the software for it.
And if you buy the remote, it should come with the remote, the software and the infrared receiver.
