If it is actually NOT illegal, you should contact Microsoft to try and resolve the issue.

Saying my Windows XP is not legal.?microsoft exchange internet explorer

get genuine CD of Windows XP
Did you properly Register or Activate your Windows when you first got the computer or installed XP. Did you buy the computer used? It may be illegally installed by the previous owner. Was the Windows XP program bought on sites like eBay? 90% of software sold on eBay is illegal copies.

Activation is required for many users of Microsoft Windows and Office in order to enjoy the benefits of the software. If Windows activation is required, you will be asked to activate during Windows setup and required to complete activation within the first 30 days of initial use. If Office activation is required, you will be asked to activate the first time you run an Office application and required to activate within the first 50 launches (Office XP and later). Registration is recommended, but not required.

Here is the Micosoft FAQ site explaining this. It will take a lot of reading on your part.

CALL MICROSOFT AND ASK THEM WHAT THE PROBLEM IS IF YOU DID BUY IT LEGALLY THEY SHOULD SERIOUSLY HELP YOU!

This may happen for 2 reasons :

1 - Some else is using your key somewhere (in this case, call Microsoft).

2 - If your version of windows was bundled with your computer, its possible that your vendor did install you an illegal copy and charge you for it. Call your vendor and told him that your copy of windows is not legal. If they wont help you out, call microsoft. Microsoft have a strong anti-piracy policies and may sue the vendor.

Are you sure no one else has a copy of your product key? because microsoft has a stubbon ear in reconizing that the serial is from different software, once they are the same. For example, if you want to add the serial number of one microsoft word program to an other, you would not have any obstacles. this might be your case. now had some enter the key before you, yours copy then becomes invalid and probably nothing happens to theirs because it is not a product key that is widely known. If you are pretty sure this is not the case, then you should contact microsoft about the issue, because once it has been identified as illegal, then there is nothing you can do by yourself to revert it. its best to leave to the creators to deal with their own problem- contact microsoft.
