It may be different matters.

When you open a windows explorer, hit the folder tab, then you will see a 'tree' in left side. If you dont activa that option, it will opens a new windows.

If you want to open a file but windows asked what program to open it, it means that windows not sure about the files extensions, if you know what program to open it, right click on the file then choose an appropriate program and chech 'always use this program to open those file', apply then ok.

How Can I Create A Windows XP MediaCenterEdition boot disc?

I have windows xp media center edition. Since mine is an OEM version My Setup disc comes with alot of software.

Every time I

reinstall windows these software get installed too. I want to create

a setup disc for myself that only has the basic windows xp media center OS in it. I've tried many programs like bart's bootcd software, nLite and Windows unattended CD creator but when I used them I had some problems.

1.They recognize my windows software as XP PRO with SP2

2. The XP Pro SP2 boot image that i extracted and used in my boot cd does not work and so when i boot from the disc it asks me to insert the setup disc which is already inside.

3.Some of the programs build disc images too big to burn to a cd

My question now is "Is there a better way to create a boot disc or is there a better software to do this?"

Please help me in detail with this one!!!

Idiot needs help with Windows XP backup?

I have 2 computers with Windows XP, one with XP pro (sp2) and the other with XP home (sp2). I believe the XP Pro system is on the verge of a catastrophic hardware failure that will cause me to lose its data.

Is there a way to back up the unique data from the XP Pro system to a file/zip archive that I can then copy/restore to my XP home system?

Idiot needs help with Windows XP backup?windows vista ultimate

You can burn your data that you don't want to lose onto CD or, if your hard drive is still good ( assuming the hardware failure is something else ) you can just put it into your system with XP Home as a second drive.

Email me if you have any other questions.

Good luck.

Ok, You need to boot off the CD-Rom drive in order to format your drive. Insert your XP CD and reboot your PC. You should be able to format and reinstall the OS. Aslong as you have a valid product key.

Since you forced Windows to destroy itself by deleting the system files, your only option now is to reinstall Windows from scratch using the original setup disk. I sure hope you have one. If you don't you'll need to buy a license or get one from the mfr.
You have a Windows XP Upgrade disk (I do too, although i created a "fake" XP Disk by burning my i386 folder to a disk so I could install without a previous OS on my system) The upgrade disk is for people that had previously purchased a Microsoft Operating System only. You can either do what I described above (using another computer), borrow a (full) windows disk from a friend, OR purchase a Full install version. There is no other way around it :-(
if you formated the hard, then all the files erased.

Windows XP Home Picture and Fax Viewer Crashing?

I've got Windows XP Home with SP2 and in the last few months my picture viewer has started crashing when I close a window. (I'm simply opening the My Pictures photos and its contents) It is steadily worsening so now (in addition to crashing) it takes 5x longer to load the thumbnail previews, longer to rotate a photo or to rename it. If when I am viewing an individual photo and decide to close it 7 out of 10x it will crash the program and All picture folders and open windows will crash. I have to use task manager to shut them down and start again. It doesn't matter if this is a picture from my camera, or an image I saved off the net. My Music folders and My Documents seem to have no problems. I have plenty of RAM, and my graphics card still runs the Sims2 and allows me to watch movies online so..... Yeah what can I do to fix this? Is there a Windows program that can repair windows xp? All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Windows xp momentarily freezing up?

This problem has me totally baffled. I work in a small office, all Dell PC's with Windows XP Pro with SP2. The problem began about 3 months ago and seems to be happening to all the PC's on our network, but not necessarily at the same time. XP runs fine for a while, then suddenly stops responding for about 20 seconds, then back to normal again. During this momentary lapse, the mouse can still be moved on the screen with no hesitation, but clicking does nothing. Anti-Virus detects nothing wrong, also verified there was no spyware or adware on the hard drive. Windows updates are set to automatic and up to date. But now I'm starting to wonder if one or more of the WIndows updates are the culprit. Also all are running Office XP and have all the updates including Office SP3. Checking the event logs gave no clue either. Any clues? Please Help!

Installing Windows XP Pro x64?

How do I install Windows XP Pro x64?

I have Windows XP Home Edition SP2 (32 bit) that came with my computer. Will I have to save all my files? ... Will installing this be like reformatting the hard drive? Should this be *that* difficult for me to do? I'm still a student (so I want to do it myself to keep the cost down).

Installing Windows XP Pro x64?windows xp home

First of all, you CANNOT "upgrade" a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit. So yes, you will have to reformat your drive (as a new install). Also, your CPU must have a 64-bit memory technology instruction set. Most of Intel's new processors have this (It's called "EM64T" just so you know). Also, your HDD, BIOS, CPU, Motherboard must all be able to support the extended memory width before you attempt to install XP 64-bit.

First, make sure all your components are compatible. Second, backup all your stuff. Third, reformat and install XP 64-bit. But before you do this, make sure you have all the drivers needed for 64-bit burned onto a CD or something.

64-bit is not really THAT important now, as MS is still promoting its 32-bit versions of Windows, and software is not optimized for 64-bit yet. There are no significant advantages between x64 and x86 in regards to gaming either.

To make sure your CPU supports 64-bit instructions, download "CPU-Z" and run it. If you see "EM64T" or "x86-x64" in the "Instructions" section, you can run 64-bit Windows on your CPU. Then you have to make sure your BIOS supports it - check your motherboard's specifications for that information.

Installing Windows XP Pro x64?microsoft visual studio internet explorer

I am confused...does your PC have a 32 or 64 bit processor? You can only install the 64 bit version or XP Pro on a machine with a 64 bit processor. When I installed XP Pro 64 I backed up all my "my documents" items as well as "my pictures" and "my music". Hope this helps.
The thing about doing that is, you have to find all your drivers for yourself after installing xp64. Your recover disk will be useless for doing this since all the drivers are 32bit. Another thing is you will have to find and save your burning programs and DVD codec programs for installing after you install xp64... This is the one problem that holds people back from doing the switch from vista to xp on their sluggish laptops. Most come with the operating system on a recovery CD and you have to buy or reinstall drivers and programs from scratch...

Problem With Booting Up Windows XP?

I have a problem booting up Windows XP Home Edition SP2:

When i turn it on it loads the compaq thing, then when it gets to the Windows XP screen after a while it stops. The Blue scrolling thing in under the windows XP thing is still going, but my HD activity light stops blinking. I already did system restore when it was in safe mode. ALSO it will only boot right when its in Safe Mode. Its working now,but what can i do to prevent this from happening again?

Problem With Booting Up Windows XP?www.microsoft.com

I would run a chkdsk to be sure your hard drive is ok. To do this click on start, then run, the type in chkdsk/f. It will probably give a message that says it cannot run now, shall it run on startup, say yes.

After that, if it still gives you problems, then on boot up push F8 repeatedly. From the menu that comes up, choose restore to last properly working setup.

Problem With Booting Up Windows XP?microsoft windows xp internet explorer

If possible format the HD and do a new installation
Hi

Ok , first either the HD is damage or a bootfile from xp is not loading correctly . Now if your HD has bad sector or a damage track then it will take LONGERRRR why , cause it cant read from that sector . Now if xp has a bad loading driver or corrupt file , then yes it will take longer . Also , sometimes but most of the time , mem can be a problem with this too. If you can find another mem try to replace it and test it ok
It sounds like some drivers are not compatible with your computer. try to UN install one driver at a time and restart computer after you UN install the driver so the computer will install new driver. if all of that did not solve the problem you have no choice but to format and do clean installation.

Good Luck
well my friends had also the same problem..got to the advanced startup menu(press F8 continously once comp starts)...check what message it gives (regarding any file missing..) ...if a file is missing copy it from the xp cd(if u have it) or remove the message from startup by running(Start-%26gt;Run)-%26gt; msconfig command(do not change settings until u r sure abt it!)...else go to Start-%26gt;Run-%26gt; cmd OK...type the followin command : sfc /scannow..it will verify the file organization is valid...u could also try chkdsk to check the hard disk...please read the provided link.... i hope u r able to fix it...otherwise u culd
Considering that you have already did system restore, I think you should better save your files and settings on a removable drive while you can boot in safe mode. Then format and reinstall XP. At least you'll have a working system.

Good work :)

Help with windows xp?windows registry internet explorer

get it off microsoft update all you need to do is press the validate button thats it
Just go to

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/d...

and go to the download area. Even if it did ask you for a product key, if you bought XP pro you could easily enter it.
you can use windows update to get SP2. and it will install it for you.
go to help and support and your product key is on the side of your pc
The best way is to run Windows Update this will give you what you require, however this will be very time consuming.
actually you can get SP3 now from microsofts web site. I want to say its about 300mb and you can download it for free then install it.
If you have a legal copy of XP then you have no problems. Just go to microsoft.com and find downloads and SP2. It will check that your XP is legal (validator) then download and install.

If your copy is illegal - well - I am not the one to help you.
Yes you can get the CD of SP2.

No it isn't going to ask for any product key, but it well verify if you have a legle copy of XP.

You well be able to install just SP2.

you well still have to update your computer, because SP2 came out like 2 years ago (or more). They are getting ready to release SP3.

What that means is even after you install SP2, you are going to have to update your computer (download more fixes) for a while.
You can download it fro microsoft but I'd still order the cd. It's alot to download and if anything goes wrong you'll have to start all over again. The cd doesn't require a key code. It's the cleanest way to install the sp2.
Download it from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...

If that link don't work, go to microsoft.com, then to Downloads. In the search, type service pack 2

Look for Windows XP Service PAck 2 for It professionals.

So, at the back of this CD got CD key and I use it during installation. Now, there's a sign that saying I have to activate my window. I inserted the key correctly over and over again and I chose to use internet to activate. But it failed saying that my key was mistype.

Can anyone help me on this. thank u sOOo much.

If you are absoutely sure you are typing the key in correctly, then Windows knows that your key is not valid. It's probably asking you now to telephone them to continue the verification process and/or to offer you to buy a legit copy.

You're somewhat stuck now.

New installs of Windows XP allows you up to 30 days before forcing you to register and validate your key. But if it's after that time then you are stuck to contact them directly or to buy a legit copy of the product.

Install Windows XP Professional x64?

I know very little about software (so please make answers simple). Anyway, I decided to take the advice of a woman at the university bookstore and got Windows XP Pro x64...

How do I install it?

I have Windows XP Home Edition SP2 (32 bit) that came with my computer. Will I have to save all my files? ... Will installing this be like reformatting the hard drive? Should this be *that* difficult for me to do? I'm still a student (so I want to do it myself to keep the cost down).

Install Windows XP Professional x64?microsoft xp

First, you should make shure your system actually is x64 capable.

All you need to install your new OS, is to enter the bios doing startup, (usually by hitting DEL), then enter the boot section, and set your CD/DVD drive, as the 1ST boot device.

When done, save and exit. Then it should load the setup wizard, which would lead you trough the rest of the install process.

It might allow you to upgrade, but i won't recommand it. Instead doing a clean install, insures that its "clean", I.E. No broken reg-keys, and no broken programs.

Check out the following guides:

Install Windows XP Professional x64?download windows xp internet explorer

Installing a new operating system will destroy all existing data on your hard drive.

There is NO reason to go with X64 unless you are into Video Editing and Computer aided disign (CAD). They require the extra processing speed and capacity.

If you do install XP Pro x64 will not notice any difference at all.

You will gain nothing.

Stick with what you have.
First, make sure you have a processor that can handle a 64 bit operating system.

Do you have a dual core processor like AMD64x2?

Then you will need to reformat the hard drive, or just replace the old with the new version.

You cannot upgrade directly from XP 32 bit, which is what you have, to a 64 bit. You have to save all of your data to an external storage of some sort, and you have to reinstall all of your installed programs from CD, or have licenses for the programs you downloaded that will allow you to upgrade at no additional charge. Some might have a free patch to install. You will probably have to upgrade some of them to the 64 bit operating system versions. Some popular XP programs are not compatible with 64 bit. There may be a file transfer wizard you can find on-line that can guide you through this. There is one for Vista when changing from XP to Vista which is about the same situation.

If you are counting on your computer to get through school, you should wait until summer or when all of your programs can be inactive for a while, just in case.

You may need to spend money upgrading some of your programs and drivers to accomodate the change. So, if your computer is tolerable and working fairly smoothly, wait till school is out then mess with it.

try log in Windows Safe Mode. Then add a new user with Administrator access.

To get into the Windows 2000 / XP Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

Windows XP Log on Problems?windows live mail internet explorer

from the log on screen hit ctrl-alt-del twice and then you will get a standard log on screen.
what i'd do, is purchase a copy (or even download it, it's FREE) of LINUX OS, and ditch windows and surprisingly you'll never have a problem again....
Either boot up into Safe Mode (before you get to the login screen, it'll tell you that some key like F2 or F8 will give you different login options), or:

When XP boots up and you are at the logon screen, press the CTRL+ALT+DELETE key combination twice during the friendly logon interface to use the conventional Windows 2000 logon interface.

Now, in the Username box, make sure Administrator is showing in there.. If you never set up a password when XP was installed, leave the password area blank and just press enter.. That should get you to the true system admin screen.
u can only log in guess well go to control panel in da start menu and click users account

Anytime a machine automatically reboots without providing any info, the Startup and Recovery is usually set to Automatically restart. Uncheck the box and at least the error message may stay up then. You'll find it under System Properties on the Advanced tab and then under the Settings button.

I have seen something similar with DEP enable and if there is a low level packet driver (nic trace utility) that is enabled with Windows Firewall. One quick test would be to disable any firewall software and reboot.
I will assume that your system is not booting into windows at all. If it was I would use system restore first.

If not your best bet may be to go into the bios (hit del at first boot), find the boot sequence and choose boot from CD as the first pick. Insert your Windows XP Home disk and save / reboot. Your CD should boot into XP setup where you can reinstall or choose repair instillation. Limited success with repair, I would reinstall.

At that point your problem should be solved or it could be your hard drive. You will know by then.

I tend to seek the simplest solutions.

Help re-installing Windows XP Home Edition!?

Ok since Im missing some programs on my computer that came with it originally and plan on selling it I requested a re-installation CD from Microsoft for Windows XP Home Edtion SP2. I have heard that you need to reformat your disk but I dont know how to do that, help please!?!

What you are missing is the programs from Dell - not Microsoft.

The disk you are getting from M$ will only have Windows on it (including IE, Outlook Express, etc.).

All the other stuff was put on by Dell.

When you get the disk, just boot up the mischine with the disk in it, follow the on screen instructions to boot from CD and then install a new copy.

When you get to the option on where to install it, delete the existing partition, then create a new one with the maximum size and the format ast NTSF (Quick).

This will erase all your personal info and put a lcean copy of Windows on it for you.

All this makes perfect sense once you see the instruction on the screen.

NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer completely reboot.

6 When prompted, click Yes.

The computer restarts. Because the computer is restored to its original operating state, the screens that

appear, such as the End User License Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the

computer was turned on.

7 Click Next.

The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.

Go to Microsoft Updates as you now will be WAY out of date.
to format a sistem partition you have to restart your computer with CD inside. Before that you have to set your computer to reboot from a CD (you do that in BIOS). In DOS you have to go to a drive that is not sistem one. Then you type: format_c:_/Q_/fs:ntfs. "c" beeing sistem partition. When it's done, restart again. The instalation will begin. When I say CD I mean Win CD.

If I have Windows XP and Visa install discs and Vista installed, can XP overide it?

I want XP back on my computer. The new computer I have has Vista on it. I have a Microsoft Windows XP Professional w/SP2 install disc and if I put it in, will it simply over ride the Vista or do I have to go through some complicated process? Thanks

If I have Windows XP and Visa install discs and Vista installed, can XP overide it?windows registry

Possibly.

If you have the "full" version of Windows XP Professional w/SP2, you can boot from it and completely overwrite your computer's hard disk drive with new partitions and perform a clean installation.

You would, of course, probably be forced to boot from the Windows XP Professional SP2 installation CD because you probably would not be allowed (by Windows Vista) to initiate an installation of an older version of Windows from within Windows Vista.

You will want to make very certain that you have XP-compatible drivers for all the hardware in your laptop before you initiate the process of installing Windows XP Professional SP2 onto your laptop. Thus, you may need to go to the laptop manufacturer's Web site and download the appropriate hardware drivers for Windows XP for your computer's hardware. Then, you will need to save those drivers to removable media of some type so that they will be available for you to use when you're done installing Window XP Professional SP2.

Also, you may want to check to make sure that your laptop's recovery partition has been burned to CD or DVD (as the case may be) before you do anything. If you have a full recovery CD or DVD already (supplied by the laptop manufacturer) you may be safe. But, you need to read your computer's documentation to find out whether your laptop's hard disk drive has a "hidden" partition that contains "restore" data.

And, one last thing (I promise). Before you jettison Vista, make sure you go online to download all the protective software that you may desire to use on your laptop (once you have XP installed and before you connect it to the Internet). Some such software includes AVG Free anti-virus (or similar), SpywareBlaster (or similar), Spybot Search %26amp; Destroy, CCleaner, ZoneAlarm firewall (or similar). You will want to store the installers for all these programs on removable media so that you can have them without needing to venture out on the Internet "unprotected" after you have installed XP.

If I have Windows XP and Visa install discs and Vista installed, can XP overide it?ie 6 internet explorer

I think you're playing with fire.

Yes, the process is indeed complicated.

I would seek professional advice or get the computer shop to do it. Windows XP will NOT override Vista. it's never heard of Vista so how can it override it? All it will do is install itself, then you have two OS's on the same computer. If Vista continues to work, XP won't. Not until you install all your programs like Office, Nortons, etc., again, then Vista won't work. What a mess. As I said, get advice, and not from Yahoo Answers. You have no idea who you're talking to or how much experience they have. For example, I could be a 12 year old kid!

Microsoft have released a Vista to XP downgrade disk, but it's NOT available to the public. Your computer dealer may have one however.

Non-Genuine Windows XP?

Does anyone know:

-From where can I get an installation file which installs all windows xp updates since sp2: to be used for non-genuine windows?

OR

-How can I transfer updates from a PC with a genuine copy to a PC with a non-genuine copy?

OR

-What is the most str8forward way to bypass the verification during updates.

Thanks.

Non-Genuine Windows XP?windows 95

try this site: http://www.autopatcher.com/autopatcherxp...

Non-Genuine Windows XP?download ie internet explorer

You should buy the software, instead of worrying about the verification.
I think many of our expert friends here would hesitate to answer this type of inquiry, for ethical reasons perhaps.
1) Internet

2) 4gb CD's or a Flashdisk with about 2~4gb's of space. But it's a lengthy and unnecessary process.

3) Get a genuine windows.
Do a search on Demonoid.com for a WGA fix.
impossible.. buy a genuine one.

OR

disable and enable updates...

OR

in windows updates in control panel, set it to Notify me but don't automatically blah blah blah... to get rid of the geniune reminder stuff...
Ask microsoft for assistance with your non-genuine version of XP. I think you can buy a copy of the original from them if you tell them a story of how you came to obtain an illegal copy. Other option is to go to a computer flea market and buy a copy of the software. Or try some china-man computer shops, they will often sell you a OEM licence for XP at a fraction of the cost. Don't bother with the backdoor download of updates, it's too hard, cumbersome and useless. I heard that you can choose the updates from the microsoft site, but can choose not to download 'Genuine Advantage' which is the piece of invention microsoft uses to determine your copy is genuine or not.

Do you need the windows xp media center remote?

i have an hp windows xp home edition sp2 desktop computer and i'm upgrading to windows xp media center edition 2005 and i need to know if you NEED the media center remote to use it and if so, can i use it with the pc i currently have or do i need to buy an infrared signal reciever for my pc?

Do you need the windows xp media center remote?windows 2000

If you do not have a TV tuner card you are wasting your time changing to MCE.

If you have a TV tuner card you can use what ever came with that setup. If you do not have the MCE disks that came from HP, then the HP remote will not work on the system unless you load the software for it.

And if you buy the remote, it should come with the remote, the software and the infrared receiver.

ICS trouble shooting in windows XP?

I have two PC running windows XP pro. With sp2. The first one is connected to ADSL service, I tried to run ICS (internet connection sharing )between these two computers but it did not work. On the client PC whenever I launch internet explorer it shows immediately error message (The page can鈥檛 be displayed ) as if there is no connection at all. In fact I followed Microsoft Article ID 314066 (How to enable Internet Connection Sharing on a home or a small office network connection in Windows XP) and many others but it did not work

Would you please advise how to solve the problem.

ICS trouble shooting in windows XP?windows themes

First these are the connections you would need:

-Cable from wall to Modem

-Ethernet, or USB, from modem to computer

-Ethernet cable from Computer #1 to Computer #2 (NOTE--- This must be a crossover ethernet cable, not a straight through ethernet cable)

On computer #1 turn on the ICS service. On computer #2 you need to tell it to connect to the internet through another computer.

That should do it.

Problem booting windows xp?

Hi! I recently reformatted my computer and installed windows xp professional with sp2 on it. when i boot my pc and after the bios logo/info appears, the screen turns black for a while before proceeding on to a black screen with white progress bars (like the ones you see when resuming from a hibernation). this process takes very long and i desperately need a solution. thank you!!

sounds like you need a new hard drive try to format the long

way a reinstall windows.if that dont work get another hard drive

Problem booting windows xp?ies internet explorer

Unplug any external devices...USB printer, hard drive, etc...see if that clears it up.

Also when u get into windows check the device manager, to see if all the proper drivers are installed.

incidentally that's what it is doing on that screen...loading drivers.
i think the boot file might have been corrupted so boot using windows xp sp2 cd and repair the installation.Should work if xp has been corrupted and if it does not work then u can conclude the problem is with hardware.also u did not mention that didi xp boot properly after the format even once.

yes you will, unless you partition your hard drive first, and install the other os on the second partition, you would then dual boot, there is very little difference between the two os's. but good luck with it anyway.

hello you ok ?

i have in the past after i have repaired my own or a clients computer installed service pack 2 from an official microsoft software cd i own.

basically service pack 2 incorporates extra security, precautions into your current xp home or xp pro system.

if your wanting to get rid of xp pro and install xp home as the primary operating system on your computer.

then any documents or files you dont backup before installing that operating system will be lost during formatting and installing windows.

but if you just only want to install service pack 2 and not change your current operating system everything should be ok.

when you start installing the service pack 2 update any important information will automatically be backed up during the process.

iam going to post some very usefull information below for you to help you with your windows installation.

microsoft officially state that you cannot downgrade from xp pro to home but it is possible if you know how !.

do you have a windows 98 second edition cd ?

in windows 98 there is a utility called fdisk and it will erase all the information from your hard drive.

and then you can install any operating system you want on your computer easily.

That could be lots of things.

Whats the condition of the CD?

Check your ram. If you can take some of the ram out and test each individual one, you may notice that one of them is faulty.

Try using one module? Then go from there.

-Dont replace the mobo, thats very expensive and there a %95 chance it wont fix the problem!

Change your motherboard then reinstall Windows, format first.
Take a look at this Microsoft article.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891892/e...
don't change the board costly and might not fix the issue. Check the ram, if ok check the drive or the dvd player cables unplug and replug them then try again, check the cd for scratches or marks. replacing the motherboard won't help as it starts fine sounds like another issue so try thos steps.
I'm willing to bet you don't have enough ram installed.

Are all version of windows xp Pro is: Version 2002?

i have that on mines...

it has the version number 2002

when i look at it, it looks liek the year 2002!!

and plus there is the build number

"Build 2600"

what does that mean??

i understand i have windows XP Pro (with SP2)

Are all version of windows xp Pro is: Version 2002?ie 6

All versions of Windows XP are "Version 2002". Currently Windows XP comes integrated with Service Pack 2. If you have an older version of Windows XP without SP2 integrated, It will crash upon Installation and It won't install on the current generation of motherboards.

Are all version of windows xp Pro is: Version 2002?windows vista internet explorer

If you have a real disc---it it 2002 made.. Vista is 2006, and Windows 2000 was 1999.

You have the latest version of XP Pro if that is your question.
Yes. Look on any XP retail box at any Staples, Best Buy, etc. and you will see "Version 2002" on the box. That is "Version 2002" of Windows in general, not just XP. It was originally "Version 2002" and the "Version" number/year/etc. continues to be the same - despite SP2, it is still XP, still same interface, and so on, and same version. The "Build 2600" is something related to programming the operating system.

How can i make a custom windows xp installation?

ok, so i heard that u can make a ISO image from the current OS u got on right now... like if i got Windows XP Pro with SP2 and all the updates on my computer wit a working registration key, i can burn the whole OS in a cd kinda like a backup. but i want to know, can u do that, and take some of the programs that by default come already installed in windows? like for example, can i take off the Accesibility tools and make a ISO so when i install it again, it wont have that again??

im asking because i want to reinstall my OS, but i dont want to have everything installed like the accesibility stuff and the messenger and all that crap i dont need. also, i want it to come already installed with the programs i know that I WILL NEED. like antivirus and stuff... any program that can help me do that? thanks

There is a program called 'Norton Ghost' that creates an exact image of your HDD for replication. I think the program is licensed but you can try www.downloads.com' for a free version. As far as intalling windows is concerned, as far as I remember it asks you if you want a typical or custom install and you can choose custom to customize it at the time of installation.

Why am I getting this error message after installing Windows XP Pro?

I installed an OEM version of Windows XP Pro w/SP2. After the installation process, my computer rebooted and kept hanging at the prompt " Boot from CD/DVD: ". I changed my boot sequence to CDROM %26gt; HARD DISK %26gt; FLOPPY. Now I get an "Invalid Boot.ini" error message. I already tried the recovery repair recommended by Microsoft's website. It didn't work. Now what do I do?

Why am I getting this error message after installing Windows XP Pro?ies

This is because your PC is not able to boot from hard disk.

Main reason is your Windows Xp installation is not completed successfully.

you can do 1 thing.Boot from CD and install windows XP again. Ask it to repair or when you will install it will ask you that found 1 version of Xp and ask you to repair or not. Then repair there.

Or boot from CD and install XP. make new installation. Format hard disk drive onto which you want to install if you do not want any other data from it.

if you want some data then connect it to other PC as secondary harddisk. Store data there.

then format.

You can not do anything except successfully installing xp atleast once.

thank you.

Why am I getting this error message after installing Windows XP Pro?windows update internet explorer

Should just have to change your boot order back to Hard drive-CD-Floppy
seems like your previous installation was not successful as boot.ini error means no or corrupted boot files. Just boot from the original Xp cd and do a clean installation. Be sure to format the disk completely to get rid of traces of previous installations.

This however means losing everything that might be saved in the drive so backup before undertaking the exercise.

You can set the drive as a slave drive and access it from another working machine and backup your precious files.

Computer Stops Responding When I Resume from S3 State in Windows XP.. What's the problem?!?

I've checked out this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317272/e... which is a similar problem (and the closest solution I found) however the only difference is that this article is written to solve the problem when a computer that has two IDE drives connected to one cable and mine is not set up that way. I've tried the fix anyway but it obviously didn't work.

OEM = original equipment manufacturer and is only to be sold with a new computer

but im sure you could buy the latest version of xp with sp2 included

although its still gonna need updates anyway
The service pack SP2 is a free download. For $140 you should make sure that the product is legit and also it may or may not be an upgrade version.
OEM software is only for distribution with purchased hardware. OEM means original equipment manufacturer and is not legally available for sale on its own.
I got the XP Pro, full installation for $80

at newegg.

It depends where you buy from.
That is the full operating system in an OEM package. OEM means original equipment manufacturer. These OEM packs are designed so that small companies who build computers can buy the part/software without all the extra packaging, therefore saving themselves money. I always buy parts OEM because I don't want to pay money for the box that I will just recycle.

If you are wanting to buy the OS this is you best bet because it is much cheaper!
I wanted to clear up OEM a little more. Microsoft does not demand you buy a whole PC to get an OEM version. A new hard drive or motherboard is enough to trigger it. That said, some (a lot) of discount houses are selling OEM XP without any other purchase for around that price. I assume Microsoft is looking the other way because they want to move it out before Vista arrives also.

I want install DOS 6.2 in my win xp sp2. Is it possible? Doesn't it make problems with my windo

DOS 6.2 cannot run "under" Win XP. XP has its own DOS emulation, identified as DOS 7, which is available if you "run" the command 'cmd'. Chances are that you will be able to accomplish what you have in mind using that emulation of DOS.

DOS 6.2 is an old stand-alone (and not emulated) operating system which can be booted on its own, but can not run as a process under XP. It is the actual operating system on top of which Windows 3.11 runs. This is the opposite of what is going on with Windows XP, where DOS is now a process under the Windows kernel.

Microsoft has done a lot of things which DOS 6.2 will not handle. If you try to use DOS 6.2 stand-alone, be prepared to do without a lot of hardware and communications, as well as the NTFS file system typically used by XP computers.

I want install DOS 6.2 in my win xp sp2. Is it possible? Doesn't it make problems with my windows files?windows mobile internet explorer

Sure it's possible but will not coexist with XP on the same volume.
Why would you? If you want to be able to boot to a dos environment you can create a bootable CD and boot to Dos that way. Many dos commands are available if you go to the command screen click on Run type CMD and the type help and it will list the commands.
use vmware ... this way u can create a virtual computer (u can even select the speed the RAM and the HDD available) and it will work with no problems for the windows file system or for it's own file system.
is that even possible?
It is impossible, if you use NTFS file system. DOS can be installed on FAT (16, 32...) file system only.

If you have FAT partition and your Windows XP installed on other partition, you can use special software and install DOS on this partition. On every start of your computer you will be asked what OS you want to load.

I recomend you to use floppy disk with DOS to boot your computer if necessary.
consult a computer technician. But to my knowledge, it is possible, as lon as your pc does not create problems for you.

Is it possible to restore Windows XP back to the first ever restore point without losing updates suc

If it isn't, is it possible to locate the installation packs for Microsoft updates, so that they can be backed up somewhere else until system restore is complete?

Is it possible to restore Windows XP back to the first ever restore point without losing updates such as SP2?microsoft

You will lose the updates after restoring. Why not just update it again, it's more simpler.

Is it possible to restore Windows XP back to the first ever restore point without losing updates such as SP2?microsoft access internet explorer

Once you have SP2 installed, System Restore will NOT lose the files that come with the pack..in fact it wont touch any saved/downloaded update files from M.Soft Windows Update..the only thing is depending on how long you have been using your PC, it would need to be a near fresh install of Windows to be able to restore back to the very first restore point as Windows auto-deletes them as it goes along because while you install/uninstall new+old programs/services/drivers,etc+the space allocated to Sys.Restore builds up+eventually gets rid of old restore points due to the data held in them being too big for the allocated space. To check and adjust (if you wish) the restore point allocation space, launch System Restore, and on the welcome page (1st one), on the left side at the bottom should be an underlined sentence in blue saying System Restore Settings, click on it and in middle of the opened dialogue box should be a tab saying Settings. In there you can see how much of your hard drive space is allocated to the monitored drive(s),and you can adjust as necessary if you wish..
like first guy said, you will lose your updates among other things. If you do that you might as well use your restore disk and restore PC back to factory settings, you will lose all and your info must be backed up, but it will fix anything as long as it's not a hardware issue

How can I de-crypt a folder/file after I re-installed Windows XP pro.?microsoft outlook internet explorer

First decrypt all the files or folders with the same software by which you have encrypted it %26amp; than try to move files %26amp; folders. Please don't forget to install encryption softwre.
If I were you, I would decrypt those files using the software which I used to encrypt it.
I could be mistaken but I belive that XP encrypts user files to a particular user profile. If you reinstalled XP, then You probably lost the encrytpion key specific to that instance of the user profile. I believe there may be MS certified technicians that have the tools to decrypt EFS encrypted files. Good Luck

Windows Xp activation problem?

I recently bought a new laptop with windows xp pre installed on it, however this broke down and forced me to download a copy as it didn't come with a cd even though I bought it (!)

What on earth can i do? I'm so p'd off with windows because I paid for it all :(

Will installing a new version of non sp2 windows work?

Windows Xp activation problem?windows media player

yes but chances are you'll use all your data do you have the windows authentic sticker on your laptop anywhere looks like a bar code if so you can sue the number from there to activate windows ring them up and tell them you had to format they'll help you along there actually quite good for it

Windows Xp activation problem?windows live messenger internet explorer

If you bought the laptop from a reputable dealer then it should still be under warranty, take it back and just tell them it won't boot up, they should be able to sort it out for you at no cost. Hope you get it sorted.
If you bought it new and pre installed you should have the activation code ( this is on a sticker stuck on your machine ) if you have this you can use anybody's windows disk to install from and just use your own number. If you don't have the sticker get in touch with the shop you got the laptop from and get them to sort it out.
not being able to log on is nothing to do with activation of the windows cd,all the activation does is allow you to download software patches and various other tools and software from microsoft website, your cd must be sp1 try upgrading to sp2

once you have sorted out the loggin in issue

try reloading the cd as a fresh install

also choose the full format option

and not the quick format option
1. There must be a Windows Genuine label on your laptop with the given serial number.

2. Using cracks for validating isn't always sure as may break down your computer, gain remote access or you may get a virus on computer.

3. If you don't find label then contact your suplier where you bought the laptop and ask them to give you the Windows XP CD as they must give it.
My laptop didn't come with a CD either. But it does have a hidden recovery partition that you can access as the laptop boots up.. by press the Ctrl Key and F10 or F11.. not sure which. Anyway its an Acer.

Maybe yours has something similar?
youre saying your pissed off with windows, yet yuo downloaded an illegal copy and a crack

Im using XP Pro SP2, when I right click on a file windows explorer hangs, why?

I then have to ctrl+alt+del, bring up Task Manager, end the 'explorer.exe' process and then restart it. How can I reset whatever it is that is causing this? (I run anti-virus and Windows Defender also this will happen as soon as I've logged on - its very annoying!)

Im using XP Pro SP2, when I right click on a file windows explorer hangs, why?microsoft office

Try clearing out all the temp stuff. Run disk clean up.

Im using XP Pro SP2, when I right click on a file windows explorer hangs, why?opera browser internet explorer

1) Check that you have a least 10% of your hard drive free. Go to My Computer and right click on the Local Drive (C:). Look at the properties. If it has less that 10% free space, you will need to delete some files, or move them off the hard drive and on to a CD or DVD. Start by running the disk cleanup, which will remove temporary and other unneeded files. Go to Start, then All Programs, then System Tools and click the Disk Cleanup icon.

2) Run the msconfig utility. Go to Start, then Run and type in: msconfig

Go to the startup tab

You will see a list of all the programs that are loaded when your computer starts up. Uncheck any that you do not have to have. (Usually you can uncheck them all). If you decide you to need one, you can go back and recheck it.

3) Defrag the hadr drive. Go into My Computer and right click on the Local Drive (C:). Select Properties and go into the Tools tab. Click the Defragment Now button to start the defrag program. If you have not defrag recently (or never) it may take several hours for the program to complete.
Maybe too many contextual menu items? Also, get a better virus scanner. I'd suggest Kaspersky 6 if you don't have it already. Its sooo much better than Norton. It also might not hurt to run ccleaner either. Its a free program. Just google it.
yes
i don't know. maybe it's just your computer. is it old? if it is, then you might have to get a new computer. but i have XP Pro too and my computer is VERY old...but it still doesn't do what you said YOURS does. try cleaning out your disk by going to Disk Defragmenter and Disk Cleanup. and try getting another antivirus program that works better. its best to buy it from a store, than it is to DOWNLOAD...because downloading something will just make it slower. an antivirus disk is only about $40.00. its better if you buy it from Office Depot or Best Buy.
use FIREFOX its better more reliable better browser
just defragment ur HDD.

1.open MyComputer.

2.Right Click on drive having ur OS.

3.Select properties.

4.Select Tools tab and select Defragment Now.

5.Click Defragment in new open window.

5.Wait until, it finishes.

6.After finished, restart ur computer.
could i be right in saying its a new game................no ...ho well
if you haven't got many files reinstall xp or if you have use some removable memory to put your most important files on
You Installed an application that will run on Right Click on File (Context Menu) Remove This application. Hopefully your problem will solve

and make sure you are not sharing out drives.

It does this because you are connecting to something you are unaware of. Therefore it is "paging" a program.

Remove all programs from startup and start there.

the process for troubleshooting is IPO

Input, Process, Output

Input- what are you doing

Process - how are you doing it

Output - what are you trying to do.

I would suggest removing all things from startup on systray.

Not good to have programs loading until you load them manually

common problem for windows users.

Defraging and all that is a waste of your time at this point. You generally dont want to do that until you have allot of time on your hands I.e over night while you sleep. Drive sizes now days take at least 4 to 6 hours to defrag.
sp2 is still in bete and about to be realeased into final stage sp1 "support ends soon i believe in sept 1 sp 2 is activated foer final and sp 1 support ends oct1

Genuine windows xp is not genuine now? Microsoft says so to thousands of people. Why? Go MSFT newsgr

I bought a PC with Windows XP Home Edition already installed 2 years ago and I activated the software before the 30 days according to MSFT rules! Four days ago I began to have a notification on the website from MSFT that my software is not genuine...They want me, and also thousands of windows xp users, to reactivate with a new product key. If we do it we will get a new CD with windows xp but we have to pay a lot of money...!!! No reactivation..? No more Updates! Is it possible that thousands or millions of Genuine Windows XP turned out not genuine...? Just like that? No! I have answered to a Piracy survey at MSFT website. Plus, I have no copies at all of any kind of software from MSFT or any other software manufacturer ! All my MSFT software is registered by phone or Online! Service Pack 2 is also installed on my PC and it was MSFT who sent me a CD with SP2...!!! If my windows xp was not genuine would they give me a FREE CD from SP2...? No! Why Mr. Bill Gates? WHY ? WHY ? APPLE Yes!!!

Genuine windows xp is not genuine now? Microsoft says so to thousands of people. Why? Go MSFT newsgroups!!?microsoft word

if you have Genuine copy windows xp then you will have Genuine windows xp sticker on your computer it will be light green/white and it should be on the top, bottom or side of your tower and on a laptop it should be on the bottom if it is there you need to call Microsoft and let them know it is there and they should be able to tell you what you need to do to correct the problem, but if the sticker ain't there then you got a pirated copy and if you have the receipt for it i would let Microsoft know that too and show IT TO THE DA IN YOUR TOWN

Go MSFT newsgroups!!?windows movie maker internet exploreryeah, I am getting that message, too. it just started when i installed SBC internet service. does that have anything to do with it? i have also had this software for about 2 years. Report It

I don't know the answer for you, but the same thing has happened to me and I'm suspicious. I keep being prompted to 'get genuine' and being told my system is at risk. This is after 2 years of owning the same computer and receiving updates no probs. Like you, I'd like to know what's going on. Trouble is, you even have to pay to ask Microsoft a question or to get genuine as they say. Is this for real? Has anyone any advice?

Uhuh. You downloaded it from where? No one here will support warez
As far as I know, Media Center is only available pre-installed on select computers. It is a proprietary system not supported by any stand alone install disk. It's true that some people claim they've found or even made separate install disks, but there's no guarantee they'll work or that you won't also be downloading some viruses or malware. Having said all that, why not contact the source of the downloaded compressed file and ask them? If you can't contact the source, that might be a real big clue.

Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder

This is a small freeware utility that retrieves your Product Key (cd key) used to install windows from your registry. It has the options to copy the key to clipboard, save it to a text file, or print it for safekeeping. It works on Windows 95, 98, ME, NT4, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Office 97, and Office XP.

Download the Keyfinder and it'll tell you the Windows product key. I'm surprised you're still using SP1; SP2 came out about 3 years ago.
Go to this page and follow the instructions to get SP 2:

You can use that file on both Home and Pro versions of XP.

While at that site poke around and you'll find out all sorts of neat things. ;)

BTW: the ONLY way to get XP Pro is to BUY it. Thank the WGA for that!

What is the best software as in Windows 98 to windows xp?

What is the best software as in Windows 98 to windows xp?windows mobile

Personally I use Windows XP Pro with SP2, and I keep it updated ( with the critical updates ). Win 98 was built alot on the DOS System, and Windows.. WinMe - Well it sucked straight out from the box. Win2000, It is a Awesome and Stable OS, especially for Networking Businesses, and was mainly built for such, although some home owners use it.. WinXP Home is a good OS, and Not so many crashes since XP compared to the Win 98 Family of OS's, and without the overwhelming DOS System, and XP Pro was designed or intended for businesses, but alot of private users use it everyday, Pro has a few features that Home does not, and I personally like Pro, and may not upgrade to Vista until I buy a new computer with it.... Like the old saying " Do Not Fix it, If it is not Broken"...... Good Luck

Need to find Windows XP files on my computer?

I am a learner trying to instal Win XP Pro+SP2 on a Pavilion 8522 I was given, with a crashed Win 98 programme on it that I can't resurrect.

I got to the stage where the (blue) screen says " Valid Windows XP setup. Enter a new path where the Windows XP files are to be found"

Tried many letters-C:, D:, etc etc. But no luck. Should I just get the Seagate 40GB HDD cleaned and try again, hoping the built-in files are still intact? Any suggestions welcome .

No, updating to SP2 won't fark with any of your files.
If you do an upgrade then your data would not be affected but your computer will become awfully slow. Also any data that you have on 'My music, my documents, my videos, desktop' folders may be lost.

Software may still need to be reinstalled depending on a number of other factors. I would suggest that you take a back up of your data and do a format and clean install. This is a better option from long term considerations.
Try first going to this site:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=31694...

This will give you directions to help perform the upgrade.

Why does my Sony DCR-TRV19 camera not appear in Windows XP via the firewire card?

I was researching this on the net, and I was told that a VIA chipset motherboard wouldn't work well with this particular camera in XP Pro SP2 or Xp Home Sp2. I went back to SP1, nothing happened. The camera does show some sign of life when i take it on and off VCR mode (I get an hourglass). Something must be working in the camera becuase when I connect my hard drive (external) to the firewire port I have, the hard drive doesn't come up. When I take the camera cable out, it works.

Please tell me the camera isn't broke, because it still records and playsback.

Most likely it is a problem with your drivers. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the software that came with the camera. Also look and see if there are any updated drivers or patches on Sony's website. Have you tried connecting the camera with USB?

Problem with xp sp2?

I had to update my windows xp to the service pack2 in order for my norton antivirus 2008 to work, after it downloads and installs everything the computer restarts and when it gets to the desktop all of my icons start menu and tool bars are gone and wont come back up, i tried restarting it again and the same thing happened, i ended up having to redo my windows entireley over and i installed the updates again and the same thing happened, what is wrog? please help me!

Problem with xp sp2?windows media player 11

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago although I didn't install vista. I had to keep doing a hard boot as I didn't have anything at all to click on to reboot. It was only losing all the icons ect after I opened a program but upon restart it was all back again. In the end I downloaded spybot search and destroy and did a scan, that found a couple of things that may have been the problem. I do run McAfee on my computer but that didn't find it so spybot was the answer. If that doesn't work try doing a system restore.

Click start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore and see if that helps.

Don't know if this will help you but anythings worth a try.

Windows XP Pro Network Places Problem?

hello,

i only have one pc xp pro and the other is suse linux 10.1.

i am not worried about networking right now. but i would like too.

my MAIN PROBLEM i am having is when i go to start --%26gt; My network places --%26gt; then when i click

on "View workgroup computers" , my xp pro machine just sits there and waits and then gives an error like "MShome not accessible. Please contact your network administrator for permissions" (something to this effect).

i connect to a router via DHCP. i have Kaspersky antivirus and XP SP2 firewall.

i know i was messing around with the local security settings trying to get my xp box networked with the linux box and perhaps this screwed it up.

IS THERE A WAY TO RESULT LOCAL SECURITY SETTING BACK TO DEFAULT OR, AT LEAST, BE OPEN TO ANY KIND OF NETWORK SHARING(or to reinstall the networking part of XP only)????

Thanks !!!!

Markee.

Trying to load windows XP.?

I am using the 6 XP boot disk with SP2. When i get to the last one, it ask me to insert the XP cd with SP2. I have inserted the cd, but it won't take it. Does the cd it's asking have to have SP2 on it? I think the windows XP cd i have does not have SP2. Its an older version of XP. I think its a 2002. Can someone help. What am i doing wrong. Thanks.

Trying to load windows XP.?windows installer

what you are using is the boot disk, and what it's asking for and requires is SP2 only. If your copy of XP is legit, contact Microsoft and ask them to send you SP2. It's free and they'll ship it to you. If you call them, they will ask for the 25-digit key code, so have it ready. You can also tell them your problem and see if they will help you through it. You still should have SP2 by itself, but calling them won't hurt.
