Why does Windows XP freeze while i am installing it?

I am installing xp SP2. It gets to the point where it detects how many harddrives. then it searches for previous versions of windows. it takes a long time to do that. it freezes when you pick what partition on what harddrive to install on. anything i can do? help would be appreciated

Check the following,

1. CPU fan is working fine (may be your processor overheated).

2. Verify your HARD DISK for bad sectors.

or try to create partition and format the hard disk using thrid-party softwares. Like Nortan Disk Manager or Seagate Disk Utilities.

After that try to install the XP (SP2).

Need more help, reply me.

It sounds like you have low memory on your system. Without more information, I couldn't say for certain.

Make sure that you have enough free memory to install the service pack. If you're not sure what that is, check the microsoft site.
i think ur trying to upgrade or reinstall cuz the same thing happened to me i would say give it 20 - 30 mins b4 u even consider rebooting
How long did you wait? Like the above poster, I'd say wait half an hour. ;)
